« Judas donc, menant la cohorte et des gardes détachés par les grands prêtres et les Pharisiens, vient là avec des lanternes, des torches et des armes. Alors Jésus, sachant tout ce qui allait advenir, sortit et leur dit : Qui cherchez-vous ? Ils lui répondirent : Jésus le Nazaréen. Il leur dit : C’est moi, ils reculèrent et tombèrent à terre ». (Jean, 18, 4-6).
Seul Pierre qui a tiré son glaive demeure debout aux côtés du Christ. Le visage renversé de Judas est éclairé par une torche à sa gauche.
“Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking ?” They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.” (John 18, 4-6)
Only Peter, who has drawn his sword, remains standing next to Christ. Judas’s head, thrown back, is lit by a torch on his left.
