La messe se déroule dans la Sainte-Chapelle de Paris. La Sainte-Chapelle fut fondée par Louis IX, ancêtre de Jean de Berry, en 1240. Elle est reconnaissable à l’imposant reliquaire desservi par des escaliers, ainsi qu’à l’orgue situé en tribune au-dessus de la porte.
The mass takes place in the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. The Sainte-Chapelle was founded by Louis IX, an ancestor of Jean of Berry, in 1240. It can be recognized by the steps leading to the impressive reliquary and by the organ placed on the tribune above the door.
Les petits dragons à la retombée des voûtes sont la signature visuelle des frères Limbourg qui esquissèrent l’image lors d’une première campagne de réalisation du manuscrit. Le Maître de Bedford intervint ensuite dans les marges et finalement Jean Colombe mit en couleurs la composition en y ajoutant un ange tenant l’écu de Savoie.
The small dragons on the arch supports are the visual signature of the Limbourg brothers who sketched the image during the first phase of the manuscript’s creation. The Bedford Master then worked on the margin decoration and finally Jean Colombe coloured the composition, adding an angel holding the shield of arms of Savoy.
