Cinquante jours après Pâques, l’Esprit Saint descend sur les apôtres réunis au Cénacle de Jérusalem autour de la Vierge accompagnée de quatre femmes et de ses frères, selon les Actes des Apôtres (1, 14). La Vierge, seul personnage auréolé, reçoit les premiers rayons de lumière du Saint-Esprit : elle devient le symbole de l’Église.
La composition est typique de l’art de Jean Colombe, avec un décor architectural foisonnant. Jean Colombe a recouvert les quatre lignes du texte initial et a reporté les sept premiers mots en bas du cadre.

Fifty days after Easter, the Holy Spirit descended onto the apostles who had gathered at the cenacle of Jerusalem around the Virgin accompanied by four women and her brothers, according to the Acts of the Apostles (1,14). The Virgin, the only haloed figure, receives the first rays of light from the Holy Spirit : she becomes the symbol of the Church.
