Le troisième nocturne de l’office des morts s’ouvre sur une scène de bataille prévue par les frères Limbourg pour illustrer le psaume 30. Dans celui-ci, David rend grâce à Dieu après la victoire sur les Jébuséens et la prise de leur citadelle où Jérusalem devait être fondée. Au premier plan, l’attention du peintre se porte sur la violence du combat mais aussi sur les somptueux caparaçons des chevaux et l’or des armures. Au bas de l’encadrement, deux squelettes tiennent un phylactère où sont inscrits les premiers mots du psaume.
The third nocturn of the Office of the Dead opens on a battle scene planned by the Limbourg brothers to illustrate Psalm 30. In it, David gives thanks to the Lord after the victory of the Jebusites and the capture of their citadel where Jerusalem was to be established. In the foreground, the painter paid attention to the violence of the combat but also to the horse’s caparisons and the gold of the armour. At the bottom of the frame, two skeletons hold a phylactery on which the first words of the psalm are inscribed.
