L’office du vendredi, jour de la mort du Christ, est consacré à la Croix. Jean Colombe représente la légende des trois croix. Hélène, mère de l’empereur Constantin, aurait voyagé à Jérusalem vers 380 et serait parvenue à localiser le lieu de la Crucifixion, le mont Golgotha, où elle aurait retrouvé les trois croix. La sainte agenouillée assiste à un premier miracle : au contact de la Sainte Croix qui se fait ainsi reconnaître, un mort, encore enveloppé dans son linceul, ressuscite.
The Friday Office, the day on which Christ died, is devoted to the Cross. Jean Colombe has shown the legend of the True Cross. Helen, the Emperor Constantine’s mother, apparently travelled to Jerusalem around 380 and succeeded in identifying the location of the Crucifixion, Mount Golgotha, where she found the three crosses. The kneeling saint witnesses a first miracle : on touching the Holy Cross which is thus identified, a dead woman, still in her shroud, resurrects.
