Le Christ descend les marches du prétoire où Ponce Pilate, le gouverneur romain, a acté sa condamnation à mort. Il est suivi par les deux larrons qui seront crucifiés avec lui : l’un est nu, l’autre vêtu d’une tunique grossière.
Sur la page opposée, Jésus sort de Jérusalem en portant sa Croix. Les étendards, l’oliphant, les vêtements chatoyants de l’assistance donnent un air de fête qui contraste avec la gravité de la scène. Jésus échange un regard avec Marie qu’un soldat menace avec une masse.
Christ descends the steps of the courthouse where Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, has ruled the death sentence. Christ is followed by the two thieves who will be crucified with him : one is naked, the other is wearing a rough tunic.
On the opposite page, Jesus leaves Jerusalem carrying his Cross. The standards, the oliphant, the bright clothing of the crowd contrast with the gravity of the scene. Jesus exchanges a look with Mary who is being threatened by a soldier with a mace.
