En face, les frères Limbourg rendent avec brio l’obscurité qui surgit à l’instant de la mort du Christ. Des femmes soutiennent la Vierge évanouie. Dieu se manifeste dans les cieux et la terre tremble.
These two pages forming a diptych were illuminated over seventy years apart. Jean Colombe painted the crowd and Christ on the cross seen frontally and with a straight body. In the foreground, the Virgin is surrounded by John and holy women.
Opposite, the Limbourg brothers have rendered with skill the darkness that appears at the instant of Christ’s death. Women support the Virgin who has fainted. God shows Himself in the sky and the earth trembles.
