Au folio 157 verso, les Heures de la Passion s’interrompent. Une miniature de Jean Colombe illustre le psaume 57 composé par David alors qu’il fuit la colère de Saül. David prie devant un autel portant l’Arche d’alliance, sous la protection d’un séraphin : « À l’ombre de tes ailes je m’abrite » (verset 2).
En face, une assistance nombreuse se presse pour entendre la première messe de l’année liturgique. Rares sont ceux qui ont remarqué que trois anges apportent burette, patène et nappe liturgique pour l’Eucharistie de Noël. Seule l’initiale ornée où la Vierge et Joseph adorent l’Enfant et les médaillons qui abritent des bergers en adoration indiquent de quelle fête il s’agit.
On the verso of folio 157, the Hours of the Passion break off. A miniature by Jean Colombe illustrates Psalm 57 composed by David when he was fleeing from Saul’s anger. David prays in front of an altar on which sits the Ark of the Covenant under the protection of a seraphim “in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge” (verse 2).
Opposite, a large crowd presses together to hear the first mass of the Liturgical Year. Few have noticed that three angels are carrying the liturgical crewet, paten and cloth for the Christmas Eucharist. Only the decorated initial where the Virgin and Joseph adore the Child and the medallions that house shepherds in adoration indicate what feast it is.
