L’archange saint Michel pourfend le dragon, bête démoniaque de l’Apocalypse (12, 7-9), au-dessus du Mont qui porte son nom. Construite selon La Légende dorée sur ordre de l’archange en 710, l’abbaye domine le village de la presqu’île, représentée à marée basse. En marge, dans des médaillons, des anges représentés à mi-corps observent la scène, l’un d’eux tenant les armoiries du duc de Berry.
Le duc de Berry entretient une dévotion particulière pour les saints chevaliers, dont saint Michel fait partie. Il accompagne son neveu, le roi Charles VI, en pèlerinage au Mont-Saint-Michel en 1394.
The Archangel St. Michael slays the dragon, the demonic beast of the Apocalypse (12, 7-9), above the mountain that bears his name, Mont-Saint-Michel. According to the Golden Legend, built on the archangel’s order in 710, the abbey dominates the village on the peninsula shown at low tide. In the margin, angels shown half-length in medallions watch the scene, one of them holding the arms of the Duke of Berry. The Duke of Berry had a particular reverence for the knight saints, including St. Michael. He accompanied his nephew, King Charles VI on a pilgrimage to Mont-Saint-Michel in 1394.
