The evangelist is shown at his writing desk, inspired by the dove of the Holy Spirit. The desk attached to the high backed chair and the book tower evoke the workshop of a scribe or an illuminator of the late Middle Ages. The angel painted by mistake above the miniature traditionally accompanies St. Matthew.
