Les deux scènes du registre inférieur constituent un prologue à l’enluminure principale : elles montrent l’apôtre arrêté à Patras et battu de verges pour avoir converti la femme et le frère du proconsul romain. Ayant refusé d’adorer les dieux païens, il est attaché à une croix en forme d’X mais il continue à prêcher, attirant la foule comme le montre Jean Colombe dans la partie supérieure. Il serait mort le troisième jour de son supplice.
Born on 30 November, the Duke of Berry had an image of the Martyrdom of St. Andrew, one of his patron saints, included in the Très Riches Heures.
The two scenes in the lower register are a prologue to the main illumination : they show the apostle arrested at Patras and beaten with rods for having converted the wife and brother of the Roman proconsul. After refusing to adore the pagan gods, he was attached to an X-shaped cross but he continued to preach, attracting a crowd, as Jean Colombe has shown in the upper section. He was said to have died on the third day of torture.
