Les Péricopes des Évangiles se terminent avec un extrait de l’Évangile de Marc. Seul évangéliste à ne pas être représenté en train d’écrire, saint Marc est traîné par ses bourreaux dans les rues d’Alexandrie, attaché au bout d’une corde. Le peintre apporte un soin particulier à la représentation des textiles et suggère l’exotisme de la scène en affublant les païens de chapeaux et de turbans.
L’initiale O de la page de gauche signale le début d’un nouveau texte, un hymne à la Vierge. Elle pallie ainsi l’absence de pagination des manuscrits médiévaux. Elle est de la main des frères Limbourg et abrite un visage, peut-être celui du Christ.
The Pericopes of the Gospels end with Mark. The only evangelist not to be shown writing, St. Mark is being dragged by his executioners through the streets of Alexandria, attached to the end of a rope. The painter has paid particular attention to the depiction of the textiles and suggested the exoticism of the scene by dressing the pagans in hats and turbans.
The initial on the left page shows the start of a new text, a hymn to the Virgin, and so alleviates the absence of pagination in medieval manuscripts. It is by the Limbourg brothers and includes a face, perhaps Christ’s.
