Le jardin d’Éden semble flotter sur les nuages en une vision paradisiaque. Adam et Ève sont figurés quatre fois autour de la Fontaine de Vie pour illustrer les différentes étapes du récit biblique de la Chute. Après avoir cueilli le fruit interdit, ils sont réprimandés par Dieu et chassés du paradis.
En face, l’archange Gabriel annonce à la Vierge Marie qu’elle est miraculeusement enceinte. Dans la théologie chrétienne, le fait que Marie accepte de porter le Fils de Dieu rachète le péché originel commis par Ève. La juxtaposition des deux images a valeur de discours théologique.
The Garden of Eden seems to be floating on the clouds in a vision of paradise. Adam and Eve are shown four times around the Fountain of Life to illustrate the different stages of the Biblical story of the Fall. After gathering the forbidden fruit, they are punished by God and driven from Paradise.
Opposite, the Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she is miraculously pregnant. In Christian theology, the fact that Mary accepted to carry the Son of God redeemed the original sin committed by Eve. The juxtaposition of the two images has a meaning in theological discourse.
