Augustin, évêque d’Hippone, est baptisé par saint Ambroise, évêque de Milan, dans un édifice octogonal surmonté d’une tour évoquant les baptistères tardo-antiques. Tous deux portent la mitre, propre à la fonction épiscopale.
Les deux pères de l’Église sont considérés par la tradition comme les auteurs du Te Deum, dont le texte suit la miniature. La légende veut que le cantique ait été composé lors même du baptême d’Augustin.
Augustine, bishop of Hippo, is baptised by St. Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, in an octagonal building with a tower on top, evoking baptisteries of late antiquity. Both wear a mitre, specific to the function of a bishop. The two Fathers of the Church are considered by tradition to be the authors of the Te Deum, the text of which follows the miniature. According to legend, the canticle was composed during Augustine’s baptism.
