Zacharie, l’époux d’Élisabeth, est représenté comme un prêtre célébrant la messe. Un ange vient lui annoncer que sa femme, pourtant âgée, porte leur fils. L’étonnement et le doute de Zacharie sont traduits par sa position : il tourne le dos à l’ange et est frappé de mutisme.
La prière qui suit, le Benedictus, est attribuée à Zacharie dans l’évangile de Luc. Zacharie y rend grâce pour la naissance miraculeuse de son fils.
Zacharias, Elizabeth’s husband, is shown as a priest celebrating the mass. An angel comes to tell him that his wife, although old, is expecting their son. Zacharias’s surprise and doubt are shown in his position : his back is turned towards the angel and he is struck dumb.
The prayer that follows, the Benedictus, is attributed to Zacharias in St. Luke’s gospel. In it, Zacharias gives thanks for the miraculous birth of his son.
