La composition générale (la foule sortant de la ville, le rythme vertical des lances, l’échange entre le Christ et Marie, les enfants qui courent au-devant) dérive probablement d’œuvres que les frères Limbourg ont pu étudier, notamment du Polyptyque Orsini peint par Simone Martini vers 1335 (aujourd’hui conservé au Louvre). Il se trouvait à la chartreuse de Champmol près de Dijon lorsque les Limbourg y travaillaient (1402-1404).
The general composition (the crowd coming out of the city, the vertical rhythm of the lances, the exchange between Christ and Mary, the children running ahead) probably derive from works that the Limbourg brothers could have studied, in particular the Orsini Polyptych, painted by Simone Martini around 1335 (now at the Louvre). It was at the Charterhouse of Champmol near Dijon when the Limbourgs were working there (1402-1404).
