En revanche, la position de spectatrice de la Vierge est inspirée, probablement indirectement, d’une fresque de l’église Santa Maria Novella de Florence peinte par Andrea di Bonaiuto entre 1365 et 1367.
The arrangement of the group surrounding Christ’s Cross seems to derive from a miniature painted by Jacquemart de Hesdin for the Très Belles Heures de Jean de France (Royal Library of Belgium). However the position of the Virgin as a spectator is inspired, probably indirectly, by a fresco in the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, painted by Andrea di Bonaiuto between 1365 and 1367.
Ce sont deux artistes italiens, Simone Martini et Andrea da Firenze, qui ont introduit la figuration de jeunes enfants dans les représentations des événements tragiques de la Passion. Ce motif se retrouve également dans la procession illustrant la Litanie des saints.
Two Italian painters, Simone Martini and Andrea da Firenze began to feature young children attending tragic episodes of the Passion in their works. This pattern can be also seen in the procession at the beginning of the Litanies of the Saints.
